264 new freight wagons arrive for Tanzania’s SGR

Dar es Salaam. On Wednesday, the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) announced the arrival of 264 freight wagons at the Port of Dar es Salaam from China.

The wagons, which had arrived on Tuesday, are designed to operate on Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), marking another milestone in the nation’s drive for modernized rail transport.

“TRC remains committed to keeping the public informed about the progress of the trials and the eventual launch of these wagons into regular operations,” stated a press release signed by TRC’s Head of the Public Relations Unit, Mr Fredy Mwanjala.

The arrival and unloading process

The wagons, manufactured by China’s CRRC Corporation, were shipped from Dalian Port on November 12, 2024, following TRC’s announcement on November 15 that production was complete.

After arriving in Tanzania, the unloading process commenced, paving the way for the next critical phase—testing.

Rigorous testing underway

Once unloaded, according to the Press release, the wagons will undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet the contractual and operational standards.

The trial runs will begin with the wagons traveling empty along the SGR, followed by tests carrying freight.

These tests will assess the performance and safety of the wagons, which are designed to travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

Testing will conclude only when TRC experts, in collaboration with contractors, are satisfied with the wagons’ performance.

Upon completion, TRC will announce the official date for the start of operations.

A Diverse fleet for modern freight needs

Among the 264 wagons, 200 are dedicated to transporting containers, while 64 are designed for loose cargo.

This shipment is part of a larger order of 1,430 wagons commissioned under the contract with CRRC.

Advancing Tanzania’s railway vision

The arrival of these wagons signifies a major step in Tanzania’s efforts to modernize its rail network and improve freight transportation efficiency.

The SGR, equipped with state-of-the-art rolling stock, is poised to play a crucial role in boosting trade, reducing logistics costs, and supporting economic growth.
