IMF pledges continued support and collaboration with Tanzania

Dodoma. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dr Natu El Maamry Mwamba, on Wednesday, January 16, 2025, met and held discussions with a team of experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on behalf of the Minister for Finance, Dr Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba.

This meeting was part of a visit by the IMF team to evaluate the ongoing partnership between Tanzania and the IMF.

Speaking during a special session held in Dodoma, Dr Mwamba noted that the purpose of the IMF team’s visit was to review recent developments and expectations concerning economic policies, the national budget, and the progress of programmes such as the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the Rapid Support Facility (RSF).

Dr Mwamba commended and expressed gratitude to the IMF for its continued support to the government of Tanzania.

She emphasised that the government would remain committed to the proper management of development funds provided by the IMF, ensuring that set goals are achieved.

“Tanzania remains thankful for the exceptional support provided by the IMF through concessional loans under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The Government of Tanzania will continue to ensure the appropriate use of the funds provided,” Dr Mwamba said.

She added that Tanzania is on track to meet the objectives of the ECF programme, with December 2024’s Key Performance Indicators (QPCs) and Structural Benchmarks (SBs) expected to be successfully achieved.

On his part, Mission Chief for Tanzania and head of IMF team’s engagement with the government, Mr Charalambos Tsangarides, said that the IMF would continue to support and collaborate with Tanzania as the country strives to meet its economic goals, given the ongoing efforts by the Tanzanian Government to foster economic growth.

“It is truly heartening and motivating to continue being part of this journey with you. We can see the efforts being made by the government of Tanzania, and as the IMF, we will remain committed to supporting you every step of the way,” said Mr Tsangarides.

The meeting was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Ms Amina Shaaban, the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Mr Emmanuel Tutuba, the IMF Resident Representative, Mr Sebastian Acevedo, IMF staff members, and other officials from the Government of Tanzania.
