Dar es Salaam. The time it takes to service cargo ships at Dar es Salaam Port has seen a remarkable reduction, decreasing from an average of seven days to just three.
This significant improvement is largely attributed to the purchase and installation of modern equipment by DP World Dar es Salaam, enhancing the efficiency of loading and unloading operations.
During a consultative meeting with the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) held here in the city on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the DP World Dar es Salaam CEO, Mr Martin Jacob, outlined these advancements.
He explained that the new equipment have streamlined processes, allowing for quicker turnaround times and reducing the number of ships waiting to unload cargo.
TASAC Director General, Mr Mohamed Salum, emphasized the importance of these developments, stating that the port serves as the backbone of the country’s economic activities, particularly in the import and export sectors across Eastern Africa, including several landlocked countries.
He highlighted that the efficiency of DP World’s operations is critical for maintaining the port’s strategic role in regional trade.
“Prior to these improvements, an average of 35 ships queued at the port in September 2023,” he said.
Adding: “Since implementing the operational enhancements, that number has dropped to an average of just 15 ships by September 2024, demonstrating the positive impact of their collaboration.”
Mr Salum also stressed the necessity for effective communication between TASAC and DP World, especially when challenges arise.
As the regulatory body responsible for overseeing ports, shipping services, and maritime transport in Tanzania, TASAC plays a vital role in ensuring operational efficiency and safety at the port.
In a strategic move to bolster operations, DP World signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) on October 22, 2023. This agreement empowers DP World to operate and modernize the multi-purpose Dar es Salaam Port, enhancing its connectivity to global markets.
The consultative meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts between TASAC and DP World, showcasing their shared commitment to improving maritime operations and bolstering Tanzania’s economic position in the region.
As both parties continue to work together, the future looks promising for Dar es Salaam Port and its vital role in East African trade.
