Billionaire and spiritual leader the Aga Khan is no more

Dar es Salaam. Prince Karim Al-Husseini, Aga Khan IV, the revered billionaire philanthropist and spiritual leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, surrounded by his family, according to the Aga Khan Development Network.

As the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslims, he traced his lineage directly to the Prophet Muhammad, providing spiritual guidance to a community of approximately 15 million followers worldwide, including significant populations in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Africa.

The Aga Khan succeeded his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan, as Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at the age of 20.

Since then, he dedicated his efforts to improving the quality of life for the most vulnerable populations around the globe.

Born in Switzerland and holding British citizenship, the Aga Khan lived in a chateau in France.

His death has deeply saddened people around the world, as he touched the lives of many during his lifetime.

The Aga Khan Development Network, which he led, has made a profound impact globally through its vast array of charitable initiatives, operating hundreds of hospitals and educational and cultural projects primarily in the developing world.

In a statement, the Network extended its condolences to the Aga Khan’s family and the global Ismaili community, reaffirming its commitment to improving the quality of life for people of all backgrounds, as he envisioned.

While his philanthropic endeavors were extensive, the Aga Khan also enjoyed a life of luxury, owning a private island in the Bahamas, a super-yacht, and a private jet.

His wealth, once estimated at $1 billion by Forbes in 2008, stemmed from inherited assets and diverse business interests, including a prominent role in horse breeding.

He was known as a leading owner and breeder of racehorses, famously associated with Shergar, once the most celebrated racehorse in the world.

In addition to his charitable work, the Aga Khan founded the Aga Khan Foundation, contributing to various institutions.

Furthermore, he established the Nation Media Group, which has grown into the largest independent media organization in East and Central Africa.

His legacy is marked not only by his wealth but also by his unwavering commitment to improving lives and fostering understanding across cultures.

The Aga Khan’s passing marks the end of an era, but his impact will continue to inspire future generations.
