Health Ministry confirms two cases of Mpox in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam. The Ministry of Health announced on Monday the confirmation of two cases of Mpox in the country, confirming the presence of the virus and highlighting the importance of vigilant health monitoring.

The cases emerged after health officials received reports on March 7 of individuals exhibiting symptoms, including facial rashes, fever, headaches, and body aches.

Among those suspected was a truck driver who had recently traveled from a neighboring country to Dar es Salaam.

In response to these reports, health authorities acted swiftly, collecting samples for laboratory testing to determine the presence of the virus.

Subsequent laboratory results confirmed that the Mpox virus was present in two individuals, both of whom are now receiving appropriate medical care.

This development has prompted the Ministry of Health to enhance its monitoring and response strategies in collaboration with the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government and local health facilities.

The Health Minister, Ms Jenista Mhagama, in a press release, emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, “We urge all citizens to remain alert and follow health guidelines.”

Adding: “Early detection and cooperation are key to preventing the spread of Mpox in our communities.”

Officials explained that Mpox is primarily transmitted from animals, particularly those in the monkey family.

Human infections can occur through direct contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids.

Additionally, individuals with the virus can transmit it to others through close contact.

In light of the confirmed cases, the Ministry urged the public to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with Mpox.

They are also encouraged to avoid sharing personal items with those who may be symptomatic.

The Ministry reassured the public that it is well-prepared to manage this situation, drawing from experience in handling previous outbreaks.

They are committed to ongoing surveillance and public education to prevent further spread of the virus.

As the nation faces this health challenge, the Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in ensuring the health and safety of all Tanzanians.
