Arusha. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has called upon journalists to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly, while steadfastly upholding ethical standards and promoting entrepreneurship and national culture.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the World Press Freedom Day celebrations held at the Gran Meliá Hotel here on April 29, 2025, Mr Majaliwa emphasized the transformative power of AI in the media landscape.
“The integration of AI into journalism is not merely a trend but a necessity in our rapidly evolving information age,” stated Majaliwa.
“Journalists must equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to utilize AI effectively, thereby improving the quality and reach of their reporting.”
He urged media institutions to develop strategies that focus on promoting entrepreneurship among journalists and the broader community, noting that entrepreneurship is a viable path to increasing citizens’ income.
“Media outlets should prioritize content that fosters entrepreneurial spirit, providing the public with information that encourages self-reliance and economic development,” he said.
He also underscored the importance of preserving and promoting national culture, asserting that a nation that does not cherish its culture is lifeless.
“Our cultural heritage is the bedrock of our identity. Journalists have a duty to protect and propagate our traditions and values,” Majaliwa emphasized.
Furthermore, he encouraged the media to highlight the achievements of the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, particularly in advancing the media sector.
“This forum should also serve as a platform to showcase the government’s successes, including significant contributions to the development of the media industry,” he noted.
Prime Minister Majaliwa called on journalists to advocate for necessary reforms in media policies and laws, assuring that the government is open to receiving and implementing such recommendations to enhance the media landscape in the country.
“The government is committed to collaborating with media stakeholders to ensure that the legal and policy frameworks governing the industry are conducive to its growth and the protection of press freedom,” he affirmed.
He commended journalists for their invaluable work and urged them to continue performing their duties with professionalism, adhering to existing laws and regulations.
“Do not be afraid; the nation depends on you and takes pride in your contributions,” Majaliwa encouraged.
The World Press Freedom Day event in Arusha brought together media professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the evolving role of journalism in the digital age, with a particular focus on the ethical use of emerging technologies like AI.
