Tokyo, Japan. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has met with his Japanese counterpart, Ishiba Shigeru, who reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Tanzania, pledging continued support aimed at spurring economic growth through enhanced cooperation.
Held at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo on May 29, 2025, the high-level meeting saw both leaders underscore the importance of strong diplomatic and development ties, particularly in infrastructure development and economic collaboration.
Prime Minister Majaliwa noted that Japan’s assurance further opens doors for its investors, business entities, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to expand development cooperation with Tanzania.
During the discussions, Mr Majaliwa requested Japan’s support, through JICA, in undertaking major rehabilitation works on the Morogoro-Dodoma and Kibiti-Lindi roads, which have been severely damaged due to ongoing heavy rains across Tanzania.
In response, Prime Minister Shigeru instructed JICA and Japan’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Youichi Mikami, to visit the affected roads and carry out damage assessments.
The findings, once compiled, will inform the Japanese government’s consideration of possible areas of cooperation with Tanzania in restoring the road infrastructure.
Mr Majaliwa highlighted the strategic importance of the two roads, particularly for regional connectivity, economic resilience, and access to services, noting that their deterioration posed serious challenges to transport and logistics within the country.
On his part, Prime Minister Shigeru expressed satisfaction with the growing strength of the Tanzania–Japan partnership.
He assured that Japanese companies will continue working with Tanzania, supporting economic growth, social development, and technological advancement—especially in view of the country’s expanding population and rising development needs.
