Tanzania, World Bank discuss implementation of ‘Mission 300’ energy initiative

Cape Town. The Tanzanian government and the World Bank have held high-level discussions on the implementation of a strategic continental energy programme dubbed Mission 300, which seeks to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town, with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Felichesmi Mramba, leading Tanzania’s delegation.

Mr Mramba said the government has already mainstreamed the Mission 300 objectives into its national planning frameworks, in line with the commitments made during the African Union Heads of State Summit in January 2025, where the initiative was launched.

He noted that, for Tanzania, successful implementation of the programme would see electricity access increase from the current 78.4 percent to universal coverage by 2030.

Additionally, the country aims to raise the share of clean cooking energy to 75 percent within the same period.

“By aligning our national energy priorities with Mission 300, we are taking concrete steps to ensure that every Tanzanian has access to reliable and modern energy services, while also promoting the use of clean cooking technologies,” he said.

The World Bank delegation, led by Ms Yadviga Semikolenova, Regional Operations Manager for Southeast Africa, and Dr Rhonda Antoine, Senior Energy Specialist for Africa, commended Tanzania’s efforts and reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting the country’s progress.

They lauded the government’s deliberate approach and strong institutional coordination, which they said are essential for the programme’s success and for expanding energy access sustainably.

The World Bank also expressed its readiness to continue providing both financial and technical support to Tanzania as it works towards fulfilling the goals of Mission 300.

Mr Mramba was accompanied at the meeting by Engineer Innocent Luoga, the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, alongside senior officials from the ministry of Energy, TANESCO, the Rural Energy Agency (REA), TPDC, and the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA).
