Tanzania’s Tanesco restores power following national grid fault

Tanesco engineers and technicians worked round the clock to identify the fault and restore the supply, with the initial reconnections beginning at 4:16am

Dar es Salaam. Electricity supply has been fully restored to all areas affected by a fault in the National Grid that plunged much of the country into darkness during the early hours of Sunday morning, June 29, 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) managing director, Mr Lazaro Twange, confirmed that the outage, which began at 2:36am, had been resolved and that power had returned to all affected regions by 6:30am.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers for the disruption. This was not something we take lightly. We understand the critical importance of electricity to both social and economic activities. However, by half past six this morning, power supply had been restored in all areas that had experienced the outage,” Mr Twange said.

He explained that Tanesco engineers and technicians worked round the clock to identify the fault and restore the supply, with the initial reconnections beginning at 4:16am.

“Tanesco is not content with what happened. We acted swiftly and professionally to restore power, and we are now undertaking a comprehensive assessment to identify the exact cause of the fault and ensure that any necessary preventive measures are implemented,” he added.

Mr Twange assured Tanzanians that Tanesco remains committed to providing a stable and reliable power supply, and that the lessons drawn from this incident would inform future improvements in the grid system.

“We are currently evaluating alternative response mechanisms to address such faults more effectively in the future. Our goal is to guarantee energy security for all Tanzanians,” he noted.

Power supply interruptions stemming from faults in the National Grid have occurred intermittently in recent years, often impacting industrial production, service delivery, and daily life.

The government, through the Ministry of Energy, continues to push for investment in power infrastructure and the diversification of energy sources in order to enhance the resilience of the national power supply system.
