Manyara distributes subsidised cooking gas to promote clean energy

Hanang. The Regional Commissioner for Manyara, Ms Queen Sendiga, on Friday July 11 launched a subsidised cooking gas distribution exercise aimed at promoting clean cooking energy and reducing dependence on charcoal and firewood across the region.

The launch took place at the Old Bus Stand grounds in Katesh, Hanang District, where 3,000 fully-equipped gas cylinders were distributed to residents at a heavily subsidised price of Sh17,500 each.

The rollout is part of the ongoing national campaign to accelerate the transition to clean cooking solutions in Tanzania.

Speaking during the event, Ms Sendiga said the initiative is geared towards ensuring that all citizens—especially those in low-income households—can afford and access safe and environmentally friendly cooking energy.

“The goal is to ease the burden of high upfront costs and enable more households to shift away from traditional fuels. This is a matter of health, environmental protection, and economic justice,” she said.

The Regional Commissioner further directed all District Commissioners in Manyara to oversee the implementation closely and ensure that the agreed price is upheld throughout the supply chain.

“I urge all district leaders to be vigilant. Let us ensure that the cylinders reach the intended beneficiaries at the subsidised price of Sh17,500. We will not tolerate any agents or traders who attempt to profiteer by selling at inflated prices,” she warned.

The entire programme will see a total of 16,275 cylinders distributed across the region under the subsidy scheme.

Ms Sendiga said the campaign forms part of the Sixth Phase Government’s broader environmental and public health agenda, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The initiative is designed to reduce forest degradation caused by firewood and charcoal use while protecting households from the harmful effects of indoor air pollution linked to traditional cooking methods.

The subsidised programme is expected to lower the barrier to clean cooking adoption, encouraging a shift to safer and more sustainable energy solutions across Manyara.
