Tanzania positions itself as mining manufacturing hub for sub-saharan Africa

Tanzanian government is actively promoting investment in local production and mining support services

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania is preparing to become a regional hub for the manufacturing of mining equipment and services for countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with the government actively promoting investment in local production and mining support services.

Speaking during the launch of a new warehouse for heavy machinery parts and mining equipment on Wednesday August 13, 2025 in Dar es Salaam, the minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, said the initiative will reduce reliance on imported spare parts while lowering operational costs for mining companies.

The warehouse, established through a partnership between India’s Shan Parts Africa and Italy’s ITR, will provide a wide range of machinery components and mining equipment locally, offering services both for domestic mines and regional markets.

“I congratulate Shan Parts and ITR for choosing to invest in Tanzania. The presence of these services will significantly boost the mining sector, which is critical to our economy. We have allocated areas in Buzwagi, Kahama, for the establishment of value-addition factories and mining services,” Mavunde said.

The minister emphasised that the overarching goal is to position Tanzania as a central hub for the supply of mining products and services both domestically and to neighbouring countries.

India’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Bishwadip Ney, and Italy’s Ambassador, Giuseppe Coppola, welcomed the tripartite commercial collaboration and pledged continued support to strengthen trade relations while promoting Tanzania’s mining sector.

Shan Parts Africa Chief Executive, Malhar Dave, credited the country’s favourable investment environment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership for the decision to invest in Tanzania. Dave added that the company aims to supply high-quality parts aligned with global technological standards, supporting growth and innovation in the mining industry.

The launch is expected to pave the way for increased local production of mining equipment, reduced import dependency, and strengthened regional trade in mining services, marking a significant step in Tanzania’s ambition to become a leading industrial and mining hub in the region.
