TPA steps up port infrastructure upgrades to boost efficiency

TPA’s measures were designed not only to ease cargo handling for both domestic and transit trade, but also to ensure that the Central Corridor becomes a modern and competitive trade route supporting Tanzania’s economic development and that of neighbouring countries

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has undertaken a series of measures to improve efficiency at the country’s ports, including infrastructure upgrades, installation of modern ICT systems and enhanced collaboration with private sector operators.

Speaking on behalf of TPA director general, Plasduce Mbossa, deputy director general, Dr Baraka Mdima, said the reforms were aimed at improving productivity and service delivery while building a culture of integrity and accountability among staff, clients and stakeholders.

Dr Mdima made the remarks on August 21, 2025 when opening a stakeholders’ meeting on the Central Corridor, held in Bagamoyo, Coast Region. The meeting brought together key players in the transport and logistics chain to discuss challenges and strategies for boosting efficiency along the corridor.

He said TPA’s measures were designed not only to ease cargo handling for both domestic and transit trade, but also to ensure that the Central Corridor becomes a modern and competitive trade route supporting Tanzania’s economic development and that of neighbouring countries.

“It is important that stakeholders participating in this meeting deliberate on challenges facing the transport sector and put in place concrete strategies to improve efficiency, reduce costs and facilitate trade through the Central Corridor,” Dr Mdima said.

He assured participants that TPA remains committed to working closely with its partners to modernise the corridor and increase its economic contribution.

For his part, Transport ministry official Martin Masunga, who represented the Permanent Secretary, said the government would take into consideration all recommendations put forward by stakeholders with a view to streamlining trade facilitation and reducing delays along the corridor.

The meeting, organised by TPA under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport, was attended by representatives from the Tanzania Shipping Agents Association (TASAA), the Tanzania Customs Agents Association (TACAS), the Tanzania Shippers Council (TSC), the Container Inland Depots Association of Tanzania (CIDAT), the Tanzania Truck Owners Association (TATOA) and the Tanzania Medium and Small Truck Owners Association (TAMSTOA).
