Vietnam emerges as key market for Tanzania in 60 anniversary of bilateral ties

Diplomatic ties between Tanzania and Vietnam date back to 1965, forged during a period of shared anti-colonial struggles

Dar es Salaam. Vietnam has become Tanzania’s seventh-largest export market, with official data showing that sales of Tanzanian goods to the Asian nation rose from $226.6 million in 2020 to $314.2 million in 2024, representing a 38 per cent increase over the past five years.

The figures were highlighted as Tanzania and Vietnam marked two milestones in their shared history: the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s independence and 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Cosato Chumi, who represented Minister Mohamoud Thabit Kombo, joined Vietnam’s envoy and other dignitaries in commemorations held in Dar es Salaam.

Mr Chumi congratulated Vietnam on its 80 years of independence and praised the six decades of cooperation with Tanzania, describing the ties as grounded in mutual respect, solidarity, and a shared vision for development.

He said the celebrations reflected the social and economic strides that Vietnam had achieved through resilience, hard work and reforms over the years.

“For eight decades, Vietnam has built a strong and sustainable economy, with its sights set on attaining developed country status by 2045,” he noted.

Tanzania and Vietnam have for decades worked together in areas such as trade, investment, education, agriculture, health, science, and technology.

Mr Chumi said Tanzania valued Vietnam’s historical role, contribution, and solidarity in supporting the country’s development journey.

On her part, Vietnam’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Vu Thanh Huyen, pledged her country’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations, particularly in promoting trade, investment and technological cooperation as key drivers of economic growth for both nations.

Diplomatic ties between Tanzania and Vietnam date back to 1965, forged during a period of shared anti-colonial struggles.

Over the years, the partnership has expanded to encompass bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
