Tanzania to expand CNG refuelling network to 18 stations in Dar

Currently, there are 11 refuelling stations in the city

Dar es Salaam. The city of Dar es Salaam is set to see a significant expansion in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations, with the Government aiming to increase the current network of 11 stations to 18 by the end of this year.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Felchesmi Mramba, announced the plan on September 24 during the inauguration of a new CNG station operated by Puma Energy along Bagamoyo Road.

He highlighted that the move is intended to improve access for vehicle owners and support the wider adoption of natural gas as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly fuel alternative.

“Currently, there are 11 refuelling stations in the city, and the Government is committed to increasing this number to 18 by the end of the year to ensure broader coverage and convenience for citizens,” Mramba said.

He also noted that the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has deployed six mobile refuelling vehicles to service motorists in various parts of Dar es Salaam, further enhancing accessibility to natural gas.

The Government’s decision to expand the CNG infrastructure follows the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on CNG stations and equipment for vehicle gas systems, which was announced in the June budget speech by the Minister for Finance.

Mramba reminded the audience that this fiscal measure is designed to reduce the cost of adopting natural gas and encourage its use in motor vehicles.

Mramba commended Puma Energy for constructing the new station and encouraged other investors to continue developing CNG facilities.

“I also call upon citizens and vehicle owners to embrace natural gas, as the increasing number of stations brings this service closer to communities,” he said.

Puma Energy Chief Executive Officer, Fatma Abdallah, said the company built the station to support the Government’s efforts in promoting clean, safe, and affordable energy alternatives for transportation.

The expansion of CNG infrastructure is part of Tanzania’s broader strategy to promote sustainable energy use, reduce dependence on conventional fuels, and lower transportation costs for citizens.
