Arusha. The Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) has commenced a national training programme on radiation safety for users of baggage scanners, aimed at strengthening knowledge and adherence to safe radiation practices among institutions responsible for passenger and cargo security.
The five-day training, which runs from October 6 to 10, 2025, has brought together 31 participants from various institutions, including 28 from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), one from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), one from the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), and one from a company involved in the supply of baggage scanner equipment.
Participants are receiving both theoretical and practical training on the safe operation of radiation-emitting equipment, radiation control procedures, and emergency response measures in the workplace.
Speaking while officiating the training on behalf of TAEC Director General Prof Najat Kassim Mohamed, TAEC’s Northern Zone Manager, Dr Denis Mwalongo, underscored the importance of the programme in protecting the health of radiation users, the public, and the environment.
“Radiation is a sensitive technology applied across different sectors, hence the need to ensure that all users strictly observe the legally prescribed safety standards,” Dr Mwalongo said.
Participants expressed satisfaction with the training, noting that it will enhance their daily performance and effectiveness in safeguarding passenger and cargo safety at ports, airports, and inspection points.
TAEC continues to implement its mandate of ensuring the safe use of radiation and promoting the application of nuclear technology for the country’s sustainable development.
