Mahenge. The Resident Mines Office in Mahenge has issued a total of 714 mineral licences over a three-year period, marking a significant rise in investment activity across the mining value chain in Ulanga, Malinyi and Kilombero districts.
The licences, granted between 2022 and 2025, cover exploration, extraction and mineral trading.
Resident Mines Officer for the Mahenge Mineral Zone, Jonas Mwano, disclosed the figures on 12 November 2025 while outlining the office’s recent achievements.
According to him, the increased licensing has contributed to stronger revenue performance, enabling the office to reach 78.7 per cent of its cumulative revenue target for the three districts since 2022.
He added that between July and October 2025 alone, the office collected 61 per cent of its target for that specific period.
Providing a breakdown of the licences issued, Mr Mwano said the office granted 15 exploration licences, two large-scale mining licences, 277 primary mining licences, 189 dealer licences and 23 broker licences.
He noted that the Resident Mines Office in Mahenge issues licences that legally empower any investor or stakeholder to engage in mining-related activities, including extraction, value addition and mineral trade, in line with the Mining Act, Cap 123.
On government revenue collections from the mineral value chain, he said the office collected TSh2.8 billion over the three-year period, representing 78.7 per cent of its established target.
Mr Mwano further highlighted progress made in strengthening compliance and sector governance.
The office has been conducting capacity-building sessions for miners, particularly on provisions of the Mining Act and its Regulations, environmental protection in mining operations, and workplace health and safety standards.
He also pointed to infrastructure improvements, noting that the office has secured a modern mineral trading hub designed to accommodate the current number of dealers and meet regulatory requirements.
The Mahenge Resident Mines Office was established following amendments to the Mining Act, Cap 123, and began full operations in 2022.
