Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has taken a major technological leap in the energy sector following the official launch of smart electricity meters—an innovation designed to simplify the process of purchasing and accessing electricity for millions of customers.
The new system, unveiled by the Minister for Energy, Mr Deogratius Ndejembi, marks a historic shift in the way TANESCO delivers services.
The launch took place on December 5, 2025, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC), attended by government leaders, energy stakeholders and TANESCO executives.
Minister Ndejembi said the new smart meters allow customers to receive electricity instantly after purchasing a token, without the need for an additional number-input device (CIU).
This advancement, he noted, aims to eliminate challenges that were common under the old system.
“Today we celebrate a major milestone by TANESCO—one of the best-performing public institutions in customer service,” he asserted.
Adding: “The smart meter ushers in transformative changes in how the utility manages revenue collection.”
He added that the struggles customers faced when entering token numbers pushed the government to pursue technological reforms.
“This launch marks a significant step for our country in embracing modern technology,” he underscored.
“I am directing TANESCO to ensure these smart meters are distributed across all high- demand areas and conform to international standards while educating customers on their benefits.”
Deputy Minister for Energy, Ms Salome Makamba, described the launch as a continuation of the Government’s commitment to improving public services.
“I am delighted to witness this transformative step, coming just 33 days since Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office. Today we make history through the launch of Smart Meters for TANESCO customers,” she said.
Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr Albert Chalamila, underscored the importance of protecting electricity infrastructure and commended TANESCO for strengthening collaboration with security agencies to curb vandalism.
“This milestone reminds us of our responsibility to protect infrastructure. I applaud TANESCO for working closely with the Police Force to combat sabotage. Keep up this momentum to ensure reliable electricity supply,” he stated.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Energy, Mr Felichesmi Mramba, also congratulated TANESCO, noting that smart meter technology will greatly simplify the process of detecting customer challenges even before they are reported.
Meanwhile, TANESCO Board Vice Chairperson, Ambassador Zuhura Bundala, said the Board takes pride in the ongoing technological transformation, which continues to motivate them to steer the utility toward even more advanced digital service delivery.
