Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s Taifa Stars opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a narrow 2–1 defeat to Nigeria in a closely fought Group C encounter played in Fez on December 23.
The Stars produced a disciplined and spirited performance at the Fez Stadium, showing confidence and organisation despite facing one of Africa’s strongest sides.
Nigeria took the lead in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi scored, sending the Super Eagles into the break with a 1–0 advantage.
Tanzania responded positively after half-time, returning to the pitch with renewed energy and greater attacking intent.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 50th minute when M’Mombwa struck the equaliser, briefly shifting momentum in favour of the Stars and raising hopes of a positive result.
However, Nigeria reacted swiftly and regained the lead just two minutes later through Ademola Lookman, whose goal ultimately proved decisive.
Earlier in the second half, Nigeria had another goal ruled out following a VAR review for offside, allowing Tanzania to remain in contention.
The Stars continued to battle bravely in the closing stages, limiting Nigeria’s chances and pushing forward in search of another equaliser.
Despite the defeat in Fez, Tanzania drew encouragement from their overall display, with the team showing resilience and tactical discipline throughout the match.
The performance provided optimism as the tournament progresses, with players displaying belief and cohesion against high-quality opposition.
