The substantial investment reflects the government’s firm resolve to transform Tanzania into a centre of commerce and maritime transport within the East and Southern African region

Ruvuma. The government of Tanzania has invested over Sh10.08 trillion in 22 construction, expansion, and improvement projects at ports across the country, as part of a strategic drive to strengthen maritime infrastructure and boost the national economy.

Speaking over the weekend during an official visit to inspect the ongoing construction of the new Mbamba Bay Port in Nyasa District, Ruvuma Region, the minister for Transport, Prof Makame Mnyaa Mbarawa, highlighted the government’s commitment to positioning Tanzania as a regional hub for trade and shipping.

“The substantial investment reflects the government’s firm resolve to transform Tanzania into a centre of commerce and maritime transport within the East and Southern African region,” Prof Mbarawa said.

He noted that the Mbamba Bay Port project, valued at Sh81 billion, is among the strategic initiatives being implemented under the ministry of Transport, particularly around the Great Lakes, to enhance regional trade and lake transport.

Deputy Director-General of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Dr Baraka Mdima, speaking on behalf of the TPA Director-General, reported that the Mbamba Bay Port project had reached 47 per cent completion.

He emphasised that the works are proceeding in line with professional standards, safety regulations, and environmental safeguards.

Dr Mdima added that the completion of the port is expected to stimulate trade between Tanzania and neighbouring countries such as Malawi and Mozambique, while creating employment, attracting investment, and opening new economic opportunities for residents of Nyasa District and Ruvuma Region at large.

Project Engineer for Mbamba Bay Port, John Paul, provided a technical update, confirming that construction activities are progressing according to the planned schedule.

Ruvuma Regional Commissioner, Brigadier General Ahmed Abbas, commended the government for its continued investment in large-scale development projects in the region, noting that the port will serve as a catalyst for economic and social advancement for local communities and surrounding areas.

The new Mbamba Bay Port is projected to strengthen maritime transport on Lake Nyasa, promote regional trade, and reinforce Tanzania’s position as a key player in East and Southern African commerce.
