Tanzanian govt highlights progress in first 100 days of presidency

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, said the progress is visible in transport, aviation, rail, ports, and tourism

Dar es Salaam. The government has recorded significant development milestones during the first 100 days of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, said the progress is visible in transport, aviation, rail, ports, and tourism.

Mr Msigwa briefed journalists in Dar es Salaam today, February 26, 2026.

The briefing was part of his ongoing tour to monitor and report on government projects nationwide.

The aim is to ensure citizens receive accurate information on the Sixth Phase government’s initiatives.

The briefing was held at Julius Nyerere International Airport to highlight major investments in the aviation sector.

“The transport sector’s contribution to the National GDP has risen from 7.1 percent in 2021 to 7.5 percent in 2024,” Msigwa noted.

He said the government, through the Tanzania Airports Authority, is implementing projects worth over Sh1.154 trillion.

The initiatives aim to improve infrastructure, safety, and the capacity to serve passengers and cargo. Thirteen modern inspection machines have been installed across airports to allow 24-hour services.

The projects include expansion and renovation of airports in Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Serengeti, Kyabajwa, Msalato, Shinyanga, Tabora, Kigoma, and Sumbawanga.

The Leaders’ Lounge at Julius Nyerere International Airport has also been completed, enhancing the country’s diplomatic profile.

“As a result, seven new international airlines have started operations in Tanzania, including Air France, South African Airways, and Saudia. This has increased competition, eased travel, and boosted tourism and international trade,” Msigwa said.

Data show that in the 2024/2025 financial year, there were 149,835 flights, 5.25 million passengers, and 37,683 tonnes of cargo, marking growth from the previous year.

From July to December 2025 alone, flight numbers and passengers rose by more than 9 to 10 percent, indicating sustained sector growth.

For the Tanzania Aviation Corporation (ATCL), the government has strengthened the airline by acquiring new aircraft, including the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

The fleet now totals 16 aircraft. Flight destinations increased from 23 in 2020/21 to 33 in 2025/26, with passenger numbers surpassing 1.17 million in 2024/25.

In the rail sector, the government, through the Tanzania Railways Corporation, is constructing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, spanning 1,219 km.

The Dar es Salaam–Dodoma section is already operational, transporting over 4.6 million passengers and 52,305 tonnes of cargo since launch.

The government has also signed an agreement to revive the Tanzania–Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) with Zambia and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

The project is expected to improve regional trade and strengthen Dar es Salaam Port.

In ports, expansion works at Dar es Salaam Port, construction of Bagamoyo Port, and development of the Great Lakes projects continue.

Customs revenue rose to Sh8.256 trillion between July 2024 and February 2025.

Marine safety has been enhanced through the construction of the MRCC Lake Victoria Centre and acquisition of specialised rescue boats.

In tourism, Tanzania continues to shine globally with attractions such as the Serengeti National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Tourist arrivals increased by 10.2 percent in 2025.

The country has also won multiple World Travel Awards, confirming its position as a leading destination in Africa and worldwide.
