Dodoma. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has formally approved the Ministry of Minerals’ budget estimates for the 2026/27 financial year.
During a session held in Dodoma on March 26, 2026, the committee reviewed the ministry’s performance report covering July 2025 to February 2026.
Committee Chairperson, Subira Mgalu, praised the ministry for its robust oversight.
The mining sector’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product reached 12.7 percent in the third quarter of 2025.
This growth stems from new projects and intensified research activities.
The committee also noted significant success in curbing mineral smuggling.
Authorities recently seized minerals worth Sh2.19 trillion across 41 separate incidents in various mining regions.
Director of Policy and Planning, Augustino Olal, presented the budget implementation report.
He stated that mineral export value rose to $4,119.9 million in 2024.
This represents a 16 per cent increase from the previous year.
Mineral exports now account for 57 per cent of all non-traditional export earnings.
Revenue collection has shown a significant upward trend. Collections reached Sh880.7 billion by February 2026.
This marks a 27.5 percent increase compared to the same period in the 2024/25 financial year.
The ministry aims to collect a total of 1.2 trillion shillings for the current fiscal year.
State Mining Corporation (Stamico) reported several operational milestones.
The corporation signed a contract with South Africa’s Plantcor Mining to develop gold licences in Kigosi.
Stamico also secured drilling contracts worth over 5 billion shillings.
Furthermore, the ministry issued 9,802 licences during this period, exceeding its initial target by 146 percent.
The Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) also recorded technical achievements.
Its laboratory maintained its international accreditation status until October 2029 following a SADCAS audit.
This ensures continued quality in geological services.
Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde assured the committee that all planned projects remain on track.
This includes the strategic procurement of a research helicopter to enhance exploration.
He attributed these departmental successes to the effective guidance provided by the parliamentary committee.
