Kane fires Bayern ahead as Tuchel watches closely

Despite Bayern’s dominance, Madrid once again showed their trademark resilience in Europe. Kylian Mbappé pulled a goal back in the second half, giving the hosts hope heading into the return leg

Bayern Munich claimed a valuable 2–1 victory over Real Madrid April 7, 2026 at the Bernabéu, taking control of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Watching from the stands was Thomas Tuchel, who observed a match full of quality, intensity and drama and one that highlighted both strengths and weaknesses in key England players.

Bayern take control

Bayern were the stronger side for much of the match and deserved their lead.

They struck first just before half-time when Luis Díaz finished a well-worked move, capitalising on space behind the Madrid defence.

Moments after the restart, Harry Kane doubled Bayern’s advantage with a composed finish from the edge of the area, marking his 49th goal of the season.

It was another clinical display from the England captain, underlining his importance for both club and country.

Madrid respond through Mbappé

Despite Bayern’s dominance, Madrid once again showed their trademark resilience in Europe. Kylian Mbappé pulled a goal back in the second half, giving the hosts hope heading into the return leg.

However, veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer produced a series of excellent saves to preserve Bayern’s lead and ensure they left Spain with the advantage.

Mixed display from Alexander-Arnold

The match also offered an intriguing performance from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Defensively, he was exposed at times, raising questions about his reliability at the back.Yet going forward, he showed his undeniable quality.

His attacking contribution was vital in creating Madrid’s goal, delivering a precise pass that allowed Mbappé to score.

Bellingham’s limited impact

Jude Bellingham started on the bench and was introduced later in the game.

While he helped energise Madrid’s push for an equaliser, his limited involvement was a surprise and may be reconsidered for the second leg.

Tie finely balanced

Although Bayern leave Madrid with a lead, the tie remains far from decided. Given Madrid’s history in this competition, they cannot be written off.

Bayern will be confident heading back to Germany, but they will know that against a side like Real Madrid, no advantage is ever completely secure.
