NMB first Tanzanian institution named top employer

Dar es Salaam. NMB Bank has made history by becoming the first Tanzanian institution to be recognized as a Top Employer in Tanzania for 2025, a prestigious award presented by the globally esteemed Top Employers Institute based in the Netherlands.

This institute certifies organizations excelling in human resource practices across 124 countries.

This latest accolade is not NMB’s first recognition as a leading employer.

In 2023, the bank received the Best Employer Award in Tanzania from the Association of Tanzanian Employers (ATE) and was named Africa’s Best Employer in 2022 by the Employer Branding Institute, a global authority in employment standards.

In a press conference held in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, January 16, NMB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Emmanuel Akonaay, expressed pride in the bank being among 2,400 organizations globally acknowledged for their excellence in human resources practices in 2025.

Mr Akonaay noted that the Top Employers Institute is a global leader in assessing and auditing organizations’ HR practices against international benchmarks.

He emphasized that this recognition reaffirms NMB’s commitment to being a strong employer and a leader in workforce development in Tanzania.

“This award from the Top Employers Institute is significant for us as an employer of approximately 4,000 people. A motivated and dedicated workforce is essential for delivering exceptional service and enhancing customer satisfaction,” Mr Akonaay stated.

“The Top Employer certification validates our efforts and strengthens our resolve to ensure success for everyone. It also reflects our commitment to creating an outstanding work environment that promotes employee well-being and pride in their roles.

“Through our inclusive culture, we strive to ensure our employees feel valued and engaged.”

Mr Akonaay highlighted several reasons why NMB earned this certification, including effective workforce strategies, talent acquisition and development, strategic deployment of employees based on their strengths, promotion of diversity and inclusion, and employee well-being initiatives.

In 2025, the Top Employers Institute awarded certifications to organizations in 124 countries, positively impacting over 13 million employees worldwide through exceptional HR practices.

Rigorous assessment process

NMB’s recognition followed its participation in the “HR Best Practices Survey” conducted by the Top Employers Institute, which evaluates organizations against global employment standards.

The assessment focused on six key HR areas and 20 specific practices, including workforce management strategies, talent acquisition, employee development, diversity and inclusion, and fostering a conducive work environment.

This award motivates NMB to continue enhancing its workplace culture, improving employment practices, and meeting the evolving needs of our employees.

“The world of work is changing, and NMB is committed to adapting by investing in its people and fostering a growth-driven environment,” underscored Mr Akonaay.

Adding: “We will uphold our commitment to excellence, ensuring that the bank remains a leader not only in financial services but also in employee welfare.”
