Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Mr Lazaro Jacob Twange as the new managing director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco).
Mr Twange, who has been elevated from his position as Ubungo District Commissioner, now assumes leadership of the nation’s principal electricity utility, which is grappling with erratic power supply despite surplus generation capacity.
This appointment follows the untimely demise of immediate past Tanesco MD, Boniface Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, who tragically passed away in a road accident on April 13, 2025, in Bunda District, Mara Region.
The accident occurred when the Toyota Land Cruiser he was traveling in collided head-on with a lorry after attempting to avoid a cyclist.
Both Nyamo-Hanga and his driver lost their lives in the incident.
Mr Twange’s public service career is distinguished by a series of strategic appointments across various districts.
Prior to his tenure in Ubungo, he served as the District Commissioner for Hai, Babati, and Mbulu, where he was instrumental in addressing community challenges and implementing development initiatives.
His leadership in these roles underscored his commitment to responsive governance and infrastructural development.
In his capacity as the District Commissioner of Ubungo, Mr Twange actively engaged with local communities to resolve pressing issues.
Notably, he addressed concerns related to water scarcity and road infrastructure in areas such as Kimara and Msigani, demonstrating his proactive approach to governance.
His efforts in these domains reflect a dedication to improving the quality of life for residents and fostering sustainable development.
Mr Twange’s appointment to Tanesco comes at a pivotal time as the company seeks to enhance its operational efficiency and expand its electricity coverage to meet the growing demands of Tanzania’s population.
