NMB launches ‘WorldWide Pesa’ for instant global transfers

Dar es Salaam. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as NMB Bank unveiled its groundbreaking new service, WorldWide Pesa, set to revolutionize how Tanzanians send and receive money across the globe.

The launch event, which occurred on Thursday, November 28 of this year, was filled with anticipation, with the bright glow of mobile screens illuminating the faces of attendees, eager to witness the unveiling of this innovative system.

Ambassador John Ulanga, the Director of International Trade and Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, took to the stage with a smile, his voice filled with pride as he introduced the WorldWide Pesa system.

“This is not just a financial service, it’s a powerful tool that will foster economic diplomacy and bring our people closer to the global community,” he said.

The crowd erupted in applause as he explained that, starting in 22 countries across East and Southern Africa, Tanzanians would now be able to send and receive money instantly, with lower transaction fees, directly from their mobile phones.

“This service will not only save time and money, but it will empower Tanzanians, wherever they are, to connect with their families and businesses without the usual barriers,” he added.

As the spotlight shifted to NMB’s Chief of Wholesale Banking Alfred Shao, he passionately spoke about the revolutionary power of WorldWide Pesa.

“Imagine being able to send money from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg or Nairobi, and have it arrive in your loved one’s hands within minutes, all from the convenience of your mobile phone. That’s the promise of WorldWide Pesa,” said Mr Shao, his words resonating deeply with the crowd.

He emphasized that this service was designed for every Tanzanian who uses NMB Mkononi, making international money transfers as simple as sending a text.

The excitement was palpable, and as the conversation shifted to the long-term vision, the atmosphere became even more charged.

With the new service, NMB Bank firmly believes that by 2028, the government’s goal of ensuring that Tanzanian diaspora remittances reach a staggering Sh3.7 trillion annually will be within reach.

This new system, designed with the help of financial partners like Thunes, TerraPay, and Nala, is a game-changer.

Yesterday’s event was a testament to how technology can bridge gaps, foster connections, and fuel economic growth.

It was clear to everyone in the room that World Wide Pesa is more than just a service – it’s a step forward for Tanzania, its people, and its place in the global economy.
