Julius Nyerere Hydropower project 99.55pc complete

Dar es Salaam. The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) is now 99.55 percent complete, with the successful installation of five turbines that are already generating electricity and contributing to the national grid.

On Thursday, December 19, the leadership of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), led by Managing Director Mr Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, visited the site to assess the progress and reaffirm their commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the project.

The ongoing works on the project are advancing swiftly, with five turbines fully installed and operational.

These turbines (numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) are currently producing an average of 1,175 megawatts of power, which has already been successfully integrated into the national grid.

“We visited this project to assess the ongoing progress and emphasize the need for strict management in areas that are yet to be completed,” said Mr Nyamo-Hanga.

He went on to add: “The overall project implementation is now at 99.55 percent, and we are already seeing power generation from the five turbines.”

The successful installation of turbines has marked significant milestones in the project’s progress.

Turbine number 4 has reached 100 percent installation and is now undergoing testing.

Meanwhile, turbine number 3 is at over 87 percent completion, which confirms the efficient progress and performance of the machines.

Mr Nyamo-Hanga emphasized the importance of quality control in the remaining stages of installation and urged project managers to maintain their high level of diligence in overseeing the completion of the remaining work.

“I urge the project managers to ensure that all remaining tasks are executed to the highest standards, so that when power generation increases, it seamlessly integrates into the national grid without any challenges,” he stressed.

In another key note, he extended his gratitude to the Sixth Phase Government led by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Ministry of Energy, and all involved parties for their unwavering support, funding, and cooperation throughout the project’s implementation.

He assured Tanzanians: “As TANESCO leaders, we promise to continue overseeing this project with great commitment and determination, ensuring its timely completion and that it brings economic and social benefits to our nation.”

The Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Project is already bringing new hope for the improvement of Tanzania’s energy sector.

It stands as one of the major achievements of the Sixth Phase Government under Dr Samia’s leadership, contributing to the country’s efforts to boost electricity generation and distribution.

This project marks a significant milestone in Tanzania’s push to enhance energy access, strengthen infrastructure, and support sustainable development for the future.
