Dar es Salaam. Tanzanite can now be sold in markets beyond Mirerani in the Manyara Region, as revealed on Monday, February 10, 2025.
The Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa, announced that the government has amended the 2019 regulations governing the Mirerani area to facilitate the sale of Tanzanite in various domestic markets, including Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar.
Dr Kiruswa made this announcement in Parliament in Dodoma, responding to a question from Arusha Urban MP Mrisho Gambo, who asked when the government would allow the sale of Tanzanite in these markets.
The Deputy Minister highlighted the importance of Tanzanite trade across the country, explaining that the Ministry of Minerals had revised Regulation 22 to introduce a structured trading system through the Tanzanite Exchange Centre (TEC).
“Under the new guidelines, rough Tanzanite can be sold outside Mirerani if the seller holds a large lapidary license,” asserted Dr Kiruswa.
Additionally, cut and polished Tanzanite may be sold if the seller has a valid business or gemstone cutting license.
Furthermore, Dr Kiruswa shared plans for the 2024/25 fiscal year, including auctions and exhibitions of gemstones, with events scheduled in Arusha, Mirerani, Mahenge, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar.
The first gemstone auction was successfully held on December 14, 2024, in Mirerani, Manyara region.
