DRC scraps visa requirements for Tanzanian nationals

Dar es Salaam. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has announced that Tanzanian nationals will no longer require visas to enter the country starting March 20, 2025.

A statement issued by the ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation on Saturday, March 22 confirmed that the DRC government had decided to lift visa requirements for Tanzanians, marking a significant step towards strengthening regional integration.

Tanzania had earlier waived visa fees for DRC citizens on September 2, 2023, following the DRC’s accession to the East African Community (EAC) in July 2022.

The move was made with the expectation that the DRC would reciprocate by eliminating visa fees for Tanzanians.

The Tanzanian government believes the decision will facilitate cross-border trade, investment, and social interactions between the two countries.

Authorities anticipate that removing visa barriers will enhance economic cooperation, reduce travel costs, and foster deeper ties between citizens.

The development is in line with Tanzania’s broader commitment to regional cooperation and aligns with its obligations under the EAC and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Government officials described the decision as a diplomatic milestone under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, which has prioritised regional partnerships and economic integration.

The ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation noted that the move reflects Tanzania’s commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties and supporting free movement within the region.
