Dodoma. Government officials from Tanzania and the United Kingdom convened on April 8, 2025, in Dodoma to discuss the findings of an in-depth analysis that identifies short- and medium-term opportunities for value addition in critical and strategic minerals found in Tanzania.
The analysis, presented by a delegation from the UK-funded Manufacturing Africa programme, outlines 13 key opportunities to enhance value addition in 11 categories of critical and strategic minerals.
The session was chaired by the minister for Minerals, Mr Anthony Mavunde, and attended by a high-level delegation led by Ms Tamsin Clayton, Head of Economic and Diplomacy Section at the British High Commission in Tanzania.
The study aligns with the strategic ambitions of the Ministry of Minerals, which aims to tap into the country’s vast mineral wealth to generate up to $11 billion in annual revenue while creating employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Mavunde commended the delegation for their technical contribution, noting that the report complements ongoing national efforts to fast-track the development of a value addition ecosystem within the mining sector.
He underscored the importance of comprehensive mineral exploration to determine the quantity and quality of critical and strategic minerals available in the country.
According to him, the pace and scale of local value addition will be heavily influenced by the availability of these resources.
The Minister further stressed the necessity of a nationally coordinated approach to implementation, urging all stakeholders to rally behind the Government’s agenda to harness the identified opportunities.
He reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment to deepening collaboration with key public institutions and development partners in pursuit of this goal.
Mr Mavunde extended his appreciation to the Ministry’s technical team for their close involvement in the research process and reaffirmed his resolve to advance the national agenda on value addition in the mineral sector.
The meeting represents a significant milestone in the growing cooperation between Tanzania and the United Kingdom in harnessing mineral resources to foster industrial growth, economic diversification, and inclusive development.
