President Samia calls for peaceful polls on Union anniversary

Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has underscored the enduring strength and uniqueness of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, as the country marks 61 years since its historic formation.

In a national address delivered on the eve of the anniversary on April 25, 2025, the Head of State called on Tanzanians to remain steadfast in protecting and advancing the legacy of unity, peace, and development bequeathed by the founding leaders, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume.

“Tomorrow, we commemorate the heroic decision of our founders to unite our two nations and form the United Republic of Tanzania. Their vision gave birth to a resilient Union, which we are duty-bound to sustain,” she said.

President Samia described the Union as a “sacred trust” and a national treasure, highlighting that it is a symbol of pride for all Tanzanians, not the preserve of government alone.

She paid tribute to former leaders for their contribution in safeguarding the Union and urged continued collective responsibility in nurturing it.

She cited milestones in economic, political, social, and diplomatic cooperation between the Union Government and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, stressing that these achievements reflect a deepening spirit of collaboration.

Despite the progress, she acknowledged that challenges remain, but affirmed that a robust framework exists to address them.

She commended the Vice President’s Office for its effective oversight on Union matters and praised the nationwide symposia that have been held to promote dialogue on successes and areas of improvement.

This year’s celebrations, which fall in a general election year, are being held under the theme 61 Years of the United Republic of Tanzania: Our Union is a Trust, Honour and National Treasure: Participate in the 2025 General Election.

Events have been decentralised, with all regions participating through various activities including project launches, cultural performances, and sports.

President Samia is expected to confer Union medals to selected citizens in recognition of their distinguished service to the nation and the cause of unity.

The President also addressed preparations for the upcoming elections, affirming that the government is committed to ensuring that the National Electoral Commission receives full support.

She called on all citizens to actively participate in the electoral process, from voter registration to casting their ballots.

“I urge all political leaders and supporters to adhere to the laws and regulations. The elections must not become a source of conflict or disunity,” she cautioned.

President Samia reiterated the importance of good governance and the rule of law, adding that her administration remains committed to upholding democracy through the 4Rs philosophy—Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding—within the bounds of the Constitution and national laws.

As the nation heads to the polls later this year, she reminded Tanzanians that unity, peace, and national cohesion must prevail over partisanship, noting that no one is above the law.

Concluding her address, the President called on all citizens to honour the Union by fostering patriotism, brotherhood, and solidarity—values she described as pillars of national strength and progress.

“Let us protect this Union and build a nation that is stronger economically, politically, socially, and diplomatically, just as our founding fathers envisioned,” she said.

Nationwide celebrations will culminate today in all regions and districts, with various festivities marking six decades plus one of one of Africa’s most enduring political unions.
