JNIA’s digital infrastructure advancements amid calls for sustainable aviation

Arusha. The Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) has announced major advancements in digital infrastructure at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), marking a significant step in its efforts to modernise the country’s aviation sector.

Speaking during a high-level panel discussion at the ACI Africa 2025 Conference here over the weekend, TAA director general, Mr Abdul Mombokaleo, said JNIA is now equipped with next-generation network systems, including core and distribution switches that form a critical part of the Airport Management Information System (AMIS).

He noted that the new infrastructure is currently operating at 50 percent of its enhanced utilisation capacity, a development that not only optimises the management of JNIA’s operations but also enables remote support for regional airports across Tanzania.

“Our strategy focuses on building a digitally integrated airport ecosystem that is resilient, scalable, and future-ready. By strengthening JNIA’s technological backbone, we are laying the groundwork for a connected network of airports, contributing to both national development and regional aviation growth,” Mr Mombokaleo said.

The announcement came as African airport chief executives, alongside representatives from ACI World, deliberated on the theme Sustainable Cooperation: Connecting Air Transport and Tourism for a Green Future and the Success of Both Sectors.

The discussions centred on the critical role of collaboration between the aviation and tourism sectors in driving sustainable economic growth, protecting the environment, and fostering inclusive development.

The digital upgrades at JNIA align with a broader vision shared at the conference to promote innovation and sustainability within Africa’s aviation infrastructure.

TAA’s initiatives demonstrate Tanzania’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve airport performance, enhance operational efficiency, and meet the evolving demands of the global aviation industry.

The ACI Africa 2025 Conference highlighted the urgency for airports across the continent to invest in digital solutions and sustainable practices, positioning themselves as catalysts for regional integration and economic transformation.
