Morogoro. Puma Energy Tanzania has officially launched a 570-kilowatt solar power plant at the Alliance One Tanzania Tobacco Limited (AOTTL) factory in Kingolwira, Morogoro, in a landmark move towards expanding access to affordable and sustainable energy solutions in the country’s industrial sector.
The facility, located some 200 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam, comprises 1,296 solar panels and six high-efficiency inverters.
It has been integrated into the national grid and is designed to supply sufficient electricity to power factory operations during peak production months between May and October.
This milestone project stems from a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between Puma Energy and AOTTL in April 2024.
The agreement guarantees a steady supply of clean energy to the factory while significantly reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
Construction of the facility commenced in March 2025 and was completed within a month, with operations beginning officially on May 4 2025.
Speaking at the launch, Puma Energy Tanzania managing director, Fatma Abdallah, described the project as a major achievement not only for the company but for the broader industrial landscape of Tanzania.
“This solar project at Alliance One marks a significant step forward, not just for Puma Energy but for Tanzania’s industrial sector as a whole. It reflects our strong commitment to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable energy solutions that enable businesses to thrive while contributing to environmental protection and our nation’s long-term future,” she said.
She added that Puma Energy is proud to be at the forefront of the country’s clean energy transition and that the project exemplifies how innovation can fuel economic progress while promoting environmental responsibility.
With a guaranteed performance lifespan of 30 years, the solar system ensures long-term energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
It also stands as a practical demonstration of Puma Energy’s vision to empower Tanzania’s industrial sector with innovative and resilient clean energy solutions.
The development aligns with national ambitions to boost industrial productivity while advancing climate-friendly growth strategies.
By investing in renewable energy infrastructure, Puma Energy reinforces its role in supporting the country’s broader development agenda through responsible and forward-looking energy practices.
Meanwhile, Puma Energy Tanzania is poised to commission four Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro within the next three months, in a development expected to significantly strengthen the country’s clean energy infrastructure.
The rollout includes a high-capacity mother station in Tegeta, Dar es Salaam, marking a milestone in the ongoing transition to sustainable energy.
The company’s CNG Project and Operations Manager, Engineer Chagaka Kalimbia, said the initiative aligns with national energy and environmental objectives by reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels, cutting emissions, and supporting a broader shift towards low-carbon alternatives.
“This project represents a significant leap in Tanzania’s shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy,” he said.
The new stations will be strategically located to maximise accessibility and impact.
In Dar es Salaam, installations are planned for Bagamoyo Road and Mandela Road, while the Morogoro station will be housed within the Alliance One Tobacco Factory.
The high-capacity mother station—intended to serve as the principal supply hub for satellite stations—will be established within the premises of Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL) in Tegeta.
The Bagamoyo Road facility will feature a capacity of one million standard cubic feet per day (1 MMScfd) and will be the country’s first integrated multi-fuel service station. It will offer petrol, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), lubricants, and CNG—setting a precedent for modern, diversified energy retailing in Tanzania.
The expansion forms part of Puma Energy’s broader commitment to supporting Tanzania’s clean energy roadmap, in line with the country’s vision for enhanced energy security, reduced environmental impact, and economic transformation through energy sector innovation.
