Tanzania to host first AI Hackathon to nurture youth tech skills

AI Hackathon will offer a competitive platform for young Tanzanians to showcase and refine their innovations in AI technologies, as part of the broader goal to nurture homegrown digital solutions

Dodoma. The director general of the ICT Commission (ICTC), Dr Nkundwe Mwasaga, has announced the launch of the country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hackathon, set to take place during the inaugural Tanzania Artificial Intelligence Forum scheduled for July 28–29, 2025.

Speaking to journalists on July 16, Dr Mwasaga said the AI Hackathon will offer a competitive platform for young Tanzanians to showcase and refine their innovations in AI technologies, as part of the broader goal to nurture homegrown digital solutions.

“Through this forum, our aim is to elevate the visibility of Tanzanian youth who are increasingly gaining global recognition for their creativity in AI,” he said.

“At the recent African AI Awards, Tanzanian innovators secured five out of ten accolades – a remarkable achievement that demonstrates our rising potential.”

Dr Mwasaga noted that the award-winning innovators will be among the participants at the upcoming forum, which will bring together tech stakeholders, policy makers and innovation enthusiasts to deliberate on the future of AI in Tanzania and beyond.

“We are proud that Tanzania is now being recognised internationally through the brilliance of our young minds,” he said.

He explained that further details regarding participation in the hackathon would soon be published on the ICT Commission’s official website, calling on aspiring innovators to seize the opportunity to present their ideas and compete for top honours.

“The Commission’s mandate is to support and scale innovation. This hackathon is one of the deliberate measures to identify, mentor and promote AI-based solutions that can serve our national development goals,” Dr Mwasaga said.

The two-day forum is expected to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking and the unveiling of transformative digital innovations emerging from Tanzania’s growing tech ecosystem.
