Tanzania’s mining commission urged to tighten safety at mining sites

Speaking during a virtual meeting held on August 27, 2025, with the Mining Commission leadership, Mr Samamba stressed the importance of intensifying safety monitoring as the short rainy season approaches

Dodoma. Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Engineer Yahya Samamba, has directed officials of the Mining Commission to strengthen safety measures in mining operations, particularly among small-scale miners, by conducting regular inspections and providing safety education to prevent accidents and fatalities.

Speaking during a virtual meeting held on August 27, 2025, with the Mining Commission leadership, including its Chairperson, Dr Janet Lekashingo, Executive Secretary, Engineer Ramadhani Lwamo, directors and regional resident mining officers, Mr Samamba stressed the importance of intensifying safety monitoring as the short rainy season approaches.

“It is crucial for Resident Mining Officers to step up inspections at small-scale mines and provide education on safer mining practices, while also ensuring that miners wear protective gear in their daily activities,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary further emphasised the need to safeguard miners’ health by ensuring that they undergo medical examinations before engaging in mining work.

He noted that maintaining good health standards was essential for sustaining productivity in the sector.

He also urged officials to resolve conflicts in mining activities promptly, pledging that the ministry was ready to intervene whenever necessary to ensure that miners operate in a peaceful environment.

In addition, Mr Samamba instructed the Mining Commission to accelerate the issuance of mining licences so that applicants can commence operations without unnecessary delays.

He encouraged Resident Mining Officers to proactively contact licence holders once their permits are ready rather than waiting for applicants to follow up in person.

“It is equally important for Resident Mining Officers to collaborate closely with Regional Commissioners’ Offices to strengthen coordination and service delivery,” he added.

Mr Samamba’s remarks come at a time when the government is intensifying reforms in the minerals sector, seeking to balance safety, productivity and efficiency while enabling Tanzanians to benefit from the country’s vast mineral resources.
