Dar es Salaam. The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has announced new cap prices for petroleum products effective today, September 3, 2025, showing mixed changes compared to the previous month, with diesel recording the steepest decline.
According to EWURA, motorists in Dar es Salaam will now pay Sh2,807 per litre of petrol, a marginal fall from Sh2,820 in August.
Diesel prices have dropped more sharply, moving from Sh2,914 per litre last month to Sh2,754 in September, a decrease of Sh160. Kerosene has also eased slightly from Sh2,870 in August to Sh2,774 this month.
In Tanga, petrol is now retailing at Sh2,868, down from Sh2,884 last month, while diesel has slid to Sh2,816 from Sh2,973.
Kerosene is retailing at Sh2,835, compared to Sh2,886 in August. In Mtwara, a litre of petrol is capped at Sh2,899, compared with Sh2,912 last month. Diesel is Sh2,847, down from Sh3,002 in August, and kerosene Sh2,866, a fall from Sh2,917.
EWURA attributed the downward adjustments mainly to lower Free On Board (FOB) prices in the Arab Gulf market, which declined by 0.2 percent for petrol, 5.5 percent for diesel and 3.5 percent for kerosene.
At the same time, premiums at Dar es Salaam Port increased by an average of 20.7 percent for petrol, 7.8 percent for diesel and 2.6 percent for kerosene, while premiums in Tanga decreased by about 12.7 percent.
The applicable exchange rate also favoured lower prices, falling by 3.96 percent in September compared to the rate used in August.
Despite the reductions, EWURA reminded retailers and wholesalers to adhere strictly to the cap prices.
Petrol stations are required to display pump prices prominently and issue receipts through electronic fiscal pump printers.
The regulator has cautioned that legal action will be taken against non-compliant operators.
The new prices come as consumers continue to grapple with the cost of living.
Analysts note that the fall in diesel prices could offer relief to businesses and transport operators, given the product’s wide use in haulage, agriculture and manufacturing.
