Tanzania Premier League 2025/26 season kicks off

The start of the new campaign marks the beginning of nearly nine months of competition, featuring 16 clubs playing 240 matches across the country

Dar es Salaam. The 62nd season of the Mainland Tanzania Premier League (NBC Premier League) gets underway today, Wednesday, September 17, 2025 with two opening fixtures in Dar es Salaam and Tanga.

The start of the new campaign marks the beginning of nearly nine months of competition, featuring 16 clubs playing 240 matches across the country.

In Dar es Salaam, Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) will host Dodoma Jiji FC at the KMC Complex from 4:00pm.

The sides last met at the same venue on April 18, 2025, with KMC securing a 2-1 victory. Both teams have historically performed strongly at home, giving KMC a slight edge, although Dodoma Jiji will be looking to overturn previous away-season challenges.

Brazilian coach Marcio Maximo who is in charge of KMC said his team is prepared and confident to start the season strongly, while Dodoma Jiji’s Rwandan coach Vincent Mashami noted that starting away is always challenging, but his squad is focused on collecting early points.

In Tanga, Coastal Union will welcome Tanzania Prisons at Mkwakwani Stadium from 7:00pm.

The sides’ last meeting at this venue ended in a goalless draw in May 2024, while Tanzania Prisons won their most recent league encounter 2-1 in Mbeya in May 2025.

Coastal Union have the advantage in recent head-to-heads, winning three of the last five matches, drawing one and losing one. Both teams have strengthened their squads ahead of the new season.

The opening matches follow the conclusion of the 2024-25 season and the annual Ngao ya Jamii clash between Simba and Yanga, which took place only 24 hours ago.

Fans will be closely watching the opening day as teams aim to start the campaign on a strong note, both in terms of points and momentum.

The season promises intense competition, not only for the league title held by Young Africans (Yanga) but also for top-four finishes and individual accolades such as leading goal scorer, assists, and goalkeeping honours.
