Yanga fans turn on coach Folz after first draw of the season

The stalemate halted Yanga’s winning momentum after four consecutive victories, including their Community Shield triumph against Simba and two comfortable wins over Angola’s Wiliete in the CAF Champions League preliminary round

Mbeya. Young Africans SC (Yanga) were forced to settle for their first draw of the 2025/26 season after being held 0-0 by Mbeya City at Sokoine Stadium, a result that triggered outrage among supporters who demanded the resignation of head coach Roman Folz.

The stalemate halted Yanga’s winning momentum after four consecutive victories, including their Community Shield triumph against Simba and two comfortable wins over Angola’s Wiliete in the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

In extraordinary post-match scenes, sections of Yanga fans chanted “Hatumtaki, hatumtaki” (“We don’t want him”), openly rejecting the French tactician.

The club’s management swiftly moved to ease tensions, stressing patience while promising to conduct an internal review.

Historic Rivalry at Sokoine

The two sides carried memories of their thrilling 3-3 draw in June 2023, when Mbeya City surged ahead with three goals before Yanga fought back to salvage a point.

This time, however, both teams cancelled each other out despite creating several opportunities.

Yanga began brightly, pressing Mbeya City’s defence and forcing goalkeeper Beno Kakolanya into early saves.

Yet, the home side settled quickly and turned the match into a more balanced contest. By half-time, Yanga had won three corners to City’s one, but both teams lacked composure in front of goal.

City’s Ibrahim Ame was a standout performer at the back, repeatedly halting Yanga’s attacks, while Pacome Zouzoua caused the hosts problems with his surging runs.

Second-Half Changes Fail to Inspire

In the second period, both coaches looked to their benches. Yanga introduced Prince Dube, Edmond John and Kouma in search of a breakthrough, but despite the fresh legs, they could not unlock Mbeya City’s organised backline.

At the other end, Djigui Diara dealt comfortably with City’s rare attempts, ensuring the match ended goalless.

Folz Responds to Pressure

Speaking afterwards, coach Folz admitted the result was frustrating but said it was part of football. He promised to use the upcoming international break to correct mistakes, especially in attack.

“We didn’t expect this result, but we have to accept it. Our biggest challenge was not converting the chances we created. We’ll use this break to improve so that the team performs better, particularly in international matches,” Folz explained.

Management Calls for Calm

Yanga spokesperson Ally Kamwe acknowledged the fans’ frustrations but urged calm, highlighting that Sokoine has historically been a difficult venue for the team.

“The management has heard the chants, but we are still carrying out our evaluations. Sokoine has always been a tough ground for Yanga, and while fans are right to demand more, the situation will be addressed,” Kamwe said.
