Tanzanian govt ‘delighted’ with progress on Kishapu solar project

Shinyanga. The Tanzanian government has expressed its satisfaction with the rapid pace of construction on the Kishapu solar power project, a major national initiative set to generate 150 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity in the Shinyanga Region.

Construction of the plant has now reached 80.4 percent completion.

The Permanent Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, made the statement following an inspection of the site’s progress.

Eng Mramba noted that the government is “delighted” with the steps taken by the contractor, emphasising that the project is a vital part of both national and international goals for securing sustainable energy.

The Sh323 billion project is being implemented in two phases.

Key Deadlines and Contractor

Eng Mramba announced that the first phase of the scheme is scheduled for completion in December 2025, at which point it will begin generating 50MW of power.

The principal contractor for the massive undertaking is Sinohydro Corporation from China.

National Development Initiative

“This project is part of the government’s efforts under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, who continues to ensure that all Tanzanians receive clean, safe, and affordable energy services,” Eng Mramba noted.

He added that the successful completion of the Kishapu solar plant will further improve electricity access in both urban and rural areas, whilst simultaneously reducing reliance on less environmentally friendly energy sources.

Contractor Commits to Quality and Timeliness

The Project Manager, Engineer Emmanuel Anderson, confirmed the “good pace” of construction, stating the team anticipates completing the project on schedule.

In response, the Manager for Sinohydro, Eng Daniel Xu, reaffirmed his company’s commitment to finishing the scheme to a high standard and within the stipulated timeframe.

“We have increased both manpower and equipment to ensure we complete the work on time,” Eng Xu commented.

“We value the excellent cooperation from the government and the citizens of Kishapu, and we promise to complete this project to the deserved quality.”

Boosting Renewable Capacity

Once operational, the Kishapu solar power project is expected to significantly boost the country’s renewable energy generation capacity, guarantee a more reliable electricity supply for institutions, industries, and the public, and stimulate economic development across the Shinyanga Region and the nation as a whole.
