Dodoma. Dr Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba has been appointed the new Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, following his nomination by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and subsequent approval by Parliament on November 13.

Dr Nchemba, who previously served as Minister for Finance, becomes the country’s 12th Prime Minister since independence, succeeding Kassim Majaliwa, who held the post from 2015.

His appointment marks a significant transition in the leadership of government business in Parliament and the broader coordination of national policies.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly endorsed the nomination, praising Dr Nchemba’s experience and commitment to economic reform.

His tenure as Finance Minister, which began in March 2021, was defined by efforts to steer the country through post-pandemic recovery, strengthen fiscal discipline, and promote sustainable development.

A seasoned politician from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Dr Nchemba has represented Iramba West Constituency in Parliament since 2010.

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Dar es Salaam and began his career as an economist at the Bank of Tanzania before joining active politics.

Over the years, he has held several key ministerial positions, including Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and Deputy Minister for Finance.

His broad portfolio reflects a deep understanding of governance, economic management, and public administration.

As Prime Minister, Dr Nchemba is expected to play a central role in driving the implementation of President Hassan’s new five-year development agenda, ensuring policy coherence across ministries, and overseeing the delivery of government priorities.

The announcement of a new cabinet line-up is anticipated in the coming days, as the administration prepares to enter its next phase of policy execution and service delivery.
