Dar es Salaam. The construction of the Jangwani Bridge, a vital infrastructure project in Dar es Salaam, has reached 13 per cent completion, officials have reported.
The 390-metre bridge, designed to mitigate chronic flooding and improve transport flow in the commercial capital, is a key focus of the government’s infrastructure strategy.
The Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, inspected the ongoing construction on Tuesday, November 25.
He was accompanied by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Eng Aisha Amour.
The project, which will be supported by 710 metres of access roads, is being constructed at a cost of Sh97.1 billion.
Mr Ulega said that the new bridge is a crucial part of a long-term strategy to address the persistent flooding that has historically disrupted social and economic activity in the city, particularly within the Msimbazi Valley.
He added that the completed bridge will not only improve resilience to seasonal floods but also significantly ease mobility for motorists, pedestrians, and transport operators who rely on the corridor for daily movement.
The construction works are being executed by China Communications Construction Company, with consultancy support provided by Leporogo Specialist Engineers in collaboration with Afrisa Consulting and Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants and Architecture.
The works are scheduled to take 24 months to complete.
The Jangwani Bridge project is financed through a World Bank loan under the Msimbazi Basin Development Project, a multi-phase initiative aimed at rehabilitating the valley, reducing disaster risks, and improving infrastructure across the basin.
