Tanzania’s PM orders uninterrupted completion of Kidunda Dam project

The Sh366 billion project will have far-reaching benefits once completed, including the generation of about 20 megawatts of electricity

Morogoro. Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has directed the ministry of Water to ensure that the construction of the Kidunda Dam proceeds without interruption and is completed on schedule so that it can begin supplying water to the public.

Dr Nchemba issued the directive on Friday, January 2, 2026, during an inspection of the multi-purpose dam project in Morogoro District, Morogoro Region, where he reviewed progress and received briefings from project officials.

Speaking after the inspection, Dr Nchemba said the Kidunda Dam is a strategic intervention aligned with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of addressing chronic water shortages, particularly those exacerbated by climate change.

He said the decision to implement the project reflects long-term leadership, noting that it was initiated at a time when the government was also undertaking several other large and capital-intensive strategic projects.

“Our leadership takes a forward-looking approach. This project was approved even as the government was financing other major national priorities, because it directly responds to the real challenges faced by Tanzanians,” he said.

Dr Nchemba further instructed the ministry of Water to prepare a clear and detailed implementation schedule to guide the contractor and ensure the project is delivered within the agreed timeframe.

The minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, said the Sh366 billion project will have far-reaching benefits once completed, including the generation of about 20 megawatts of electricity.

He added that the project will also facilitate the construction of a 72-kilometre access road, improving connectivity in the area.

Beyond energy and infrastructure, Mr Aweso said the dam will have a storage capacity of about 190 billion litres of water, which will be critical for domestic use, especially during dry seasons when water levels in the Ruvu River fall.

The minister for Agriculture, Daniel Chongolo, said the project will also support agricultural development, noting that the areas surrounding the dam are suitable for farming.

He said his ministry will promote irrigation agriculture to enable communities to fully benefit from the reliable water supply.

The Kidunda Dam is expected to play a central role in strengthening water security for Dar es Salaam and the Coast Region, while also contributing to energy generation, agriculture and broader socio-economic development.
