Senegal crowned AFCON 2025 champions after epic final victory over Morocco

In a match defined by drama, resilience and individual brilliance, Pape Gueye emerged as the decisive hero, firing home a stunning strike in extra time to separate two evenly matched sides

Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 champions after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in one of the most extraordinary finals in the tournament’s history, played in Rabat.

In a match defined by drama, resilience and individual brilliance, Pape Gueye emerged as the decisive hero, firing home a stunning strike in extra time to separate two evenly matched sides.

The goal ultimately proved enough, as Senegal defended with remarkable discipline to see out the contest.

The final moments were nothing short of chaotic.

Morocco were handed a lifeline when VAR awarded a last-gasp penalty following a collision between Brahim Díaz and Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

After a prolonged delay, Díaz stepped up with the hopes of a nation on his shoulders but his attempted Panenka was superbly read and caught by Mendy, sealing Senegal’s triumph in the final kick of the game.

Edouard Mendy’s performance was monumental.

The Senegal goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves throughout extra time, repeatedly frustrating Morocco as they attacked in waves.

At the other end, Morocco’s own goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, also delivered heroics, denying Senegal several chances and keeping the hosts alive until the very end.

As the final whistle blew, contrasting emotions flooded the stadium.

Senegalese players collapsed in exhaustion and joy before celebrating with their supporters, while Moroccan players were left devastated many in tears after suffering their first defeat of the tournament on home soil.

This victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON title, following their triumph four years earlier, and further cements this generation as one of the greatest in the nation’s footballing history.

For veterans like Sadio Mané, who hinted this may be his final AFCON appearance, the night was a fitting reward for years of dedication.

Against the odds, in hostile territory, and under immense pressure, Senegal delivered a performance for the ages one that will be remembered as a defining chapter in African football.
