Tanzania: Tanesco, REA urged to ensure timely power connections for paying customers

Deputy Minister for Energy, Ms Salome Makamba says under ongoing hamlet electrification projects, any customer who pays for electricity should be connected within three to four days

Mwanza. The Deputy Minister for Energy, Ms Salome Makamba, has directed the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to ensure that all customers who have paid for electricity services are connected without delay to enable them to utilise power for social and economic activities.

She issued the directive on February 23, 2026, after officially commissioning electricity supply at Bugofuma Hamlet, located in Ngeleka Village, Misungwi District, Mwanza Region.

The project, implemented by TANESCO at a cost of Sh174 million, is expected to benefit 171 initial customers.

Makamba said under ongoing hamlet electrification projects, any customer who pays for electricity should be connected within three to four days.

She noted that the directive has been effectively implemented in Bugofuma, where 22 out of 35 residents who paid for the service a day earlier had already been connected.

She explained that the accelerated pace of electricity connections aligns with the National Energy Compact 2025–2030, which aims to achieve 100 percent electricity access in both rural and urban areas, and to increase household connectivity to 75 percent.

Ms Makamba expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her firm and people-centred leadership, which seeks to ensure that all hamlets across the country access reliable and affordable electricity by 2030.

In a related development, Ms Makamba said all customers in the hamlet would be installed with smart meters.

These will allow users to purchase electricity conveniently from any location, without the need to manually input token numbers as was previously required.

During the event, she further instructed Tanesco and REA to prioritise electricity supply to essential public service institutions, including health centres, schools, police posts and markets. She also emphasised the continued promotion of clean cooking energy solutions.

She called upon the Misungwi District Council to improve market and bus terminal infrastructure by establishing designated cooking areas to facilitate the installation of modern clean cooking energy systems.

Meanwhile, Misungwi Member of Parliament, Mr Silvery Salvatory, commended the Ministry of Energy for the rapid implementation of various energy projects, particularly the hamlet electrification programme.

He also thanked the government for allocating 121 hamlets to Misungwi Constituency under the recently signed national project to electrify 9,009 hamlets.

The Permanent Secretary’s Representative at the Ministry of Energy for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mr Edson Ngabo, said the ministry continues to implement hamlet electrification projects across the country.

He urged residents to apply for electricity connections before project completion and to use the power supply for productive economic activities.

Misungwi District has a total of 724 hamlets.

Of these, 323 currently have access to electricity, while distribution works continue in the remaining areas.
