TASAC, Danaos hold talks to boost jobs for Tanzanian seafarers

Speaking during the meeting, TASAC Director General Mr Mohamed Salum commended Danaos Shipping for its continued support to Tanzanian maritime students

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) and Greece-based Danaos Shipping Company have held a joint strategy aimed at expanding education and employment opportunities for Tanzanian seafarers.

The meeting took place on March 31, 2026, at TASAC headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

It focused on strengthening cooperation between the two institutions in response to growing competition in the global shipping industry.

Speaking during the meeting, TASAC Director General Mr Mohamed Salum commended Danaos Shipping for its continued support to Tanzanian maritime students.

He noted that the company’s sponsorship programme has enabled several Tanzanian students to pursue maritime training.

Mr Salum said a significant number of sponsored students have already completed their examinations.

He added that many of them are now ready to join the workforce both locally and internationally.

He also acknowledged the company’s role in promoting international recognition of Tanzanian seafarers.

He said this has been particularly evident in European Union markets, where demand for skilled maritime professionals remains strong.

Mr Salum emphasised that technical skills alone are not enough for success in the maritime sector.

He said confidence, discipline and determination are equally important qualities for young professionals seeking opportunities abroad.

“Opportunities are abundant, but success depends on how well young people prepare themselves and believe in their abilities,” he said.

Danaos Shipping Vice President Mr Dimitrios Vastarouchus reaffirmed the company’s confidence in Tanzanian seafarers.

He praised their professionalism, discipline and ability to adapt to demanding working environments.

Mr Vastarouchus said these qualities make Tanzanian seafarers competitive in the global maritime labour market.

He also reiterated Danaos Shipping’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with TASAC.

He said the company will continue exploring ways to expand employment opportunities for Tanzanian nationals across its fleet.
