End of an era as Samatta retires from international football

Tanzania captain Mbwana Samatta has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 15-year journey with the Taifa Stars.

In a statement released July 8, 2026, Samatta said the decision followed careful consideration, adding that the time had come to step aside and allow a new generation of players to take the national team to greater heights.

“After careful reflection, I hereby officially announce my retirement from the Tanzania national football team (Taifa Stars), effective today,” Samatta said.

The experienced striker described representing Tanzania as one of the greatest honours of his career, saying wearing the national team shirt had been a privilege he would always cherish.

“It has been a wonderful and unforgettable chapter in my life to serve as a Taifa Stars player for nearly 15 years, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity,” he added.

During his 10-year spell as captain, Samatta led Tanzania to three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals appearances and played a pivotal role in helping the Taifa Stars reach the Round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history.

He described those achievements as some of the proudest moments of his career but insisted that the future now belongs to the next generation.

“I believe this is the right time to give younger players the opportunity to build on what we have achieved and take the team to even greater heights,” he said.

Samatta also extended his gratitude to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), coaches, teammates and supporters for their unwavering support throughout his international career.

“It has been an incredible journey filled with unforgettable moments and mixed emotions. I sincerely thank the Government and the TFF for ensuring that representing the national team remains the dream of every Tanzanian footballer,” he said.

The former captain also paid tribute to his family, friends, teammates and football stakeholders, acknowledging their support during both the highs and the lows of his career.

“Special thanks go to my family, my teammates, my friends, the Taifa Stars fraternity and all Tanzanians for the love and encouragement you have shown me and the team throughout moments of joy and disappointment,” he added.

Although he is stepping away from international duty, Samatta pledged to continue serving Tanzanian football in other capacities, using the experience and knowledge he has gained throughout his career.

“I am proud to be Tanzanian, and I promise to continue contributing to the national team and the development of our football in any way I can through my experience and ability,” he said.

Samatta’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of Tanzania’s most influential footballers.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, he leaves behind a legacy of leadership, professionalism and commitment, having inspired a generation of players while helping restore Tanzania’s presence on the African football stage.

His announcement is expected to evoke mixed emotions among football fans across the country, with many paying tribute to a player whose contribution to Tanzanian football will be remembered for years to come.
