The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has unveiled an earlier schedule for the 2026-2027 NBC Premier League season, with the competition set to conclude more than a month earlier than last season to allow the national team ample time to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
TFF President Wallace Karia announced the revised calendar during the launch of the federation’s new digital league management system in Dar es Salaam on Thursday July 09, 2026.
Under the new schedule, the Community Shield between league champions Young Africans (Yanga) and CRDB Federation Cup winners Simba will be played on August 12, 2026, before the league kicks off on August 14.
The campaign will end on May 16, 2027, lasting 275 days.
The previous season ran from September 17, 2025 to June 30, 2026, taking approximately 286 days to complete.
“We have to finish the league early because Tanzania will be involved in preparations for AFCON 2027. The national team needs adequate time to prepare, which is why the season has been brought forward,” Karia said.
He also confirmed that this year’s Community Shield will feature only Yanga and Simba instead of the usual four-team format.
“The format itself has not changed permanently, but due to the AFCON preparations we have opted for only two teams this season. The match will be played on August 12,” he explained.
Karia added that TFF would release the full league fixtures shortly despite a packed football calendar that includes AFCON qualifying matches.
During the event, TFF also launched a digital league management system designed to improve competition administration, including fixture planning and the handling of refereeing-related complaints.
“The system will help reduce complaints from clubs regarding referees and fixture congestion. Clubs are now allowed to register up to 40 players, so squad depth should minimise concerns over player fatigue,” Karia said.
The 2026-2027 NBC Premier League will feature 16 clubs, including newly promoted Kagera Sugar and Geita Gold, who earned promotion from the Championship League.
