France forward Kylian Mbappé has etched his name deeper into football history after winning the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals.
The 27-year-old reached the milestone after scoring twice in France’s thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off, matching the legendary Gerd Müller’s tally of 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup.
Mbappé also became the first player in FIFA World Cup history to win the Golden Boot in consecutive tournaments, having claimed the award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with eight goals.
His remarkable scoring exploits have also seen him surpass Lionel Messi as the competition’s all-time leading scorer.
Mbappé has now scored 22 World Cup goals in just 22 appearances, while Messi finished his World Cup career with 21 goals in 33 matches.
While France fell short of lifting the trophy, individual honours reflected the tournament’s standout performers.
Spain captain Rodri won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, goalkeeper Unai Simón claimed the Golden Glove after keeping six clean sheets, and young defender Pau Cubarsí was named the FIFA Young Player of the Tournament.
Although France ended the competition without the World Cup trophy, Mbappé’s record-breaking campaign ensured he remained one of the tournament’s defining figures, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in World Cup history.
