Govt reaffirms support for taxpayers to spur national dev

Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for taxpayers.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the 2023/24 Taxpayer Awards ceremony on Thursday, January 23, 2025, organised by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), she noted that such efforts are crucial in enabling taxpayers to conduct their businesses efficiently and freely while supporting the nation’s development agenda.

She revealed that in the 2023/24 financial year TRA collected Sh27.13 trillion out of the Sh30 trillion target, equivalent to 90 percent.

“This achievement was made possible by the authority’s improved internal systems and the expansion of the taxpayer base across the country,” she noted.

The President urged TRA officials to maintain integrity in their duties, warning that those fostering corrupt practices would face stern action.

She also called on individuals and entities avoiding tax compliance to fulfil their obligations, underscoring the critical role of taxation in national progress.

President Samia further emphasised the importance of advancing government technology systems to bolster revenue management and reduce financial dependency on external sources.

She noted that adopting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems would enhance transparency and curb revenue losses.

Finance Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, echoed the President’s sentiments, highlighting the government’s investments in digital systems to improve tax collection and minimise reliance on manual processes.

He pointed out that increased budget allocations to key sectors, including agriculture, aim to stimulate economic growth and sustain development.

TRA Commissioner General, Yusuph Mwenda, elaborated on the criteria used to select winners of the 2023/24 Taxpayer Awards.

These included voluntary tax compliance, accurate use of Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) and effective collaboration with the TRA.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, announced plans to facilitate 24-hour business operations within the region, a move aimed at broadening service delivery and creating job opportunities for the youth.

Meanwhile, NMB Bank has cemented its position as a key development partner in Tanzania by receiving three prestigious awards from TRA.

The awards, presented by President Hassan during the 2023/2024 Taxpayer Awards ceremony, highlight NMB Bank’s outstanding performance in tax contributions.

The bank was honoured in the following categories:

First Place – Largest and Best Tax-Compliant Institution in the Banking Sector; First Place – Best Contributor to Tax Collection in the Country and First Place – Largest and Best Tax-Compliant Institution Across All Sectors in Tanzania.
