President Samia to receive ‘The Gates Goalkeepers Award’

Dar es Salaam – President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania is poised to receive ‘The Gates Goalkeepers Award’ on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, a recognition that underscores her significant leadership achievements in public health, making her the first African leader to receive this prestigious honor.

This award, prepared by the Gates Foundation, follows the release of the 2022 Demographic and Health Survey report, which highlights an impressive 80 percent reduction in maternal mortality rates—a statistic that reflects both progress and ongoing challenges within the health sector.

Health Minister Jenista Mhagama announced this prestigious recognition on Monday, February 3, 2025, during a press briefing at the Ministry’s office in Dar es Salaam, marking a historic milestone as this year’s award ceremony will be held outside the United States for the first time and, notably, in Tanzania.

The fact that President Samia is the first African leader to receive this award is particularly noteworthy.

It not only illustrates her exemplary leadership but also positions Tanzania as a potential model for other nations grappling with similar health issues.

Minister Mhagama emphasized that these accomplishments are the result of strategic initiatives implemented under President Samia’s governance.

The political will to create a conducive policy environment has been pivotal in enhancing maternal and child health services.

This aligns with global health trends, which indicate that strong leadership can catalyze significant improvements in public health outcomes.

“President Samia has increased the budget for health services, including the availability of medicines and medical equipment. She has also made emergency obstetric services more accessible by constructing over 530 surgical facilities for childbirth,” the Minister stated.

This commitment to infrastructure development and resource allocation is critical in a country where access to quality healthcare remains a challenge.

The construction of surgical facilities not only increases access but also addresses the urgent need for immediate care during childbirth, which can be life-saving for mothers and infants alike.

Moreover, Minister Mhagama praised The Gates Foundation for recognizing and supporting the government’s efforts to combat maternal and child mortality.

This collaboration highlights the importance of partnerships between governmental entities and international organizations in addressing health crises.

“Specifically, we acknowledge the unique efforts of Commander-in-Chief President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the fight against maternal deaths, neonatal deaths, and the mortality rates of children under five,” she said.

Adding: “Fellow citizens, we have every reason to celebrate and stand tall as our President elevates our country’s profile beyond our borders.”

This statement not only celebrates the current achievements but also serves as a call to action for continued efforts in health reform.
