Dar es Salaam. The government has officially announced that Tanzania is free from the Marburg virus following a successful containment of the outbreak in Kagera Region.
The minister for Health, Jenista Mhagama, made the declaration on March 13, 2025, marking the conclusion of response efforts initiated after the disease was detected in Biharamulo District on January 16, 2025.
The outbreak resulted in two fatalities, prompting authorities and international partners to implement strict control measures, including community education, contact tracing, and quarantine procedures.
Over a period of 42 days, no new infections or deaths were recorded.
“Tanzania is now free from Marburg virus disease. I urge all citizens and visitors to carry on with their activities without fear, while continuing to observe health precautions such as handwashing with soap and clean water,” Mhagama said.
Marburg virus, a highly infectious disease related to Ebola, causes severe haemorrhagic fever and has a high fatality rate.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and other stakeholders supported Tanzania in controlling the outbreak by providing medical expertise, surveillance resources, and public awareness campaigns, the minister said.
